Your fertility is controlled by your hormones. In women fertility is cyclical. Your levels of oestrogen, progesterone, FSH and LH fluctuate so that the optimum balance of these hormones for fertility occurs (triggering ovulation) for a small number of days in a menstrual cycle. AMH is another hormone which is important in the egg maturation process. Measuring both FSH and AMH in blood can give an indication of a woman’s fertility potential. If this is combined with a pelvic scan to measure the AFC (Antral Follicle Count) it provides a better assessment of how fertile you are.
Higher FSH and lower AMH levels generally suggest a lower ovarian reserve, meaning fewer eggs are available for ovulation. A lower antral follicle count on a pelvic scan indicates fewer small follicles in the ovaries, which are the precursors to mature eggs. The contrary situation of low FSH and appropriate AMH level for your age would imply adequate fertility along with an appropriate AFC.
The combination of FSH, AMH and AFC test results provide a good insight into how fertile you are. However, there are several variables which may influence results such as medical history, current use of contraceptives etc. During our Fertility Care Plan calls we will advise you on the best approach to testing based on your medical history and will personalise the plan to ensure the best outcome for you. We will also make suggestions on how to increase the quality of your eggs.
